How to Play Craps

Craps can be played online or in a licensed casino, and is one of the easiest to understand casino games and only requires two basic bets to start playing, the Pass Line and Don't Pass bets, but it is of great importance to note that you can make other additional dice bets, some of which are more complicated than others that should be studied and mastered over time so that, for new Craps players it is fare simpler to start with the simplest betting options and gradually master the more complex ones offered at the Craps table.

The Pass Line Bet

In the Pass Line bet the player can win the amount he bets, which is to say that these bets are paid evenly, as is said in gaming language. The player who rolls the dice is known as the shooter. Before the shooter rolls the dice there is an opportunity to place bets on the Pass Line. Bets are won when the shooter rolls the dice on the table, but if a 7 or 11 are rolled then this will automatically double the amount of the bet on the player's pass line.

If the shooter produces a 2, 3 or 12, known as Craps, the pass line bet is lost. In case another number is produced as with 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, that number becomes the 'Point' and the shooter can win that point number if it is rolled before a 7 comes out and loses the bets on the pass line.

Here is an example: The initial throw of the dice produces a 3 and a 5, which results in a total of 8. Eight becomes the point, and the dealer will indicate it by placing a marker on the number 8. If the shooter rolls an 8 again before a 7 or an 11 is rolled, the pass line bet is won.

The Don't Pass Line

The Don't Pass Line bet runs on the same principle as the Pass Line bet in reverse, and is played against the shooter. When you make a pass line bet, you are betting that there will be a 7 or an 11 on the first roll, which wins that bet. But when you make a don't pass line bet, you are betting that a 2, 3 or 12 will be thrown, the winning bet is also evenly paid. If any other number is thrown, this will then become the point, but this time, you should wait until the point does not come back before a 7, if a 7 is thrown, the don't pass line wins.

While learning the ropes, you may like to play for free online making your first bet in craps with the 'Pass Line' bet and have a go at being the 'shooter', the person throwing the dice. If the combined total of the two dice is equal to 7 or 11, the bet is won, if it is equal to 2, 3 or 12 the bet is lost, if it is any other number then that number becomes the 'Point' and you may throw the dice again. In the event that the point number is thrown, the bet is won but if a 7 appears first then it is lost. For any other number that is thrown the game may proceed until either a 1 or a 7 is produced.

The Craps game table has the characteristic betting areas. Here is a list of the craps table's features:

  • The Pass Line - is a line where the players make their bets
  • Don't Pass bet - is a bet line for players who play against the shooter,
  • Come - is a field that is activated when a point has been achieved from the Pass Line betting area
  • Don't Come bet - is a bet similar to the Don't Pass bet, being a mirror image of the Come bet and is lost if a 7 or an 11 appears and it is won with a 2 or a 3, if none of those numbers comes out, the bet goes up to the number obtained and from that moment will be lost if the number is repeated before a 7 comes out
  • Boxes Numbered 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 are for 'purchased' bets which are won if a 7 is thrown before the chosen number
  • 6/8 Big - are bets that a 6 and an 8 will appear before a 7

The above bets are the first bets most people learn in craps, although it is perfectly possible to enjoy the game with just the line bet and the Don't pass line bets.
